何尚喜这个聪明的艺人，得到了金玲芳、李惠姝两个女人的爱；更用自己的智慧和临时“现挂”的相声段子化解了地痞、兵痞、同行之间的许多矛盾或险境；他又以同样的智慧对付日本侵略军的压迫和欺凌……
在为国民党“国大代表”演出的舞台上，何尚喜带头拒绝演出，演员们不为大量金钱“包银”所诱惑，金玲芳惨遭各种迫害之后在舞台上自尽，何尚喜在群众掩护下走向新的天地……。
