故事发生在1947年的英格兰，名声远扬的大侦探福尔摩斯（伊恩·麦克莱恩 Ian McKellen 饰）如今已是93岁高龄的老人了，晚年期间，他过着离群索居的生活，陪伴在他身边的只有管家芒罗夫人（劳拉·琳妮 Laura Linney 饰）和她的儿子罗杰（米罗·帕克 Milo Parker 饰）。 虽然已经不再过问江湖中的种种纷纷扰扰，但是对于福尔摩斯精彩的一生来说，仍旧有一些未解的谜团令他耿耿于怀。日渐僵硬的身体，每况愈下的记忆力和推理能力让他越发的意识到，现在，此刻，是他解开这些谜团的最后机会了。就这样，在缺少了老搭档华生的情况下，福尔摩斯独自开始了他的最后一次推理。。Gloria wakes up one morning in her attic with yet another boyfriend at her side, Fuffi.
