原作是山崎丰子的｢两个祖国｣，是继1980年狮子的时代后，第二度以虚构人物做为主角。故事以日系美国人第二代兄弟为中心，描写其友人与家族在太平洋战争被分裂的悲剧。原作在执笔时取材相当严谨，内容提及日中战争与远东国际军事法庭等史实时都做过采访考证。故事的时代背景与和山崎女士另一部作品大地之子接近，类似于记实小说。是大河剧第一次以昭和时期为主题的作品，也是大河剧“近现代三部作”（另外两部是翌年的“春の波涛/春之波涛”、再翌年的“いのち/命”)里的第一部。。
