李庆海夫妇进城赚钱，将女儿李彤彤交给在老家的母亲李老太和弟弟李庆江照顾。但李老太因为重男轻女，处处虐待李彤彤。。1930年代的上海，在同一间工厂做工的世钧和曼桢成为恋人。曼桢早年丧父，姐姐曼璐为了养活一家老小，心痛离别恋人去当舞女赚钱，最终嫁给了有妇之夫祝鸿才。
